Sherway Homeowners & Recreational Association

About Us...

parkswings-extended

Our objective for our web-site is to inform our residents of current information that is relevant to our community and southern Mississauga. We will include news about SHORA, our Community, City of Mississauga and safety & security concerns.

Sherway Homeowners & Recreational Association’s (SHORA) service area starts at the Etobicoke Creek in the east to Dixie Road in the west, from The Queensway in the north and to the QEW Highway in the south.

Our community association was originally known as Dixie Gardens. It was started in the early 1960’s. In December 1968, Leo Cahill, President was part of a delegation that went to Ottawa to meet with Paul Hellyer, Minister of Transport to present a Brief opposing the Expansion of the Airport. The delegates were from Applewood Heights, Forest Glen, Applewood-Cawthra Homeowners Associations, and of course Dixie Gardens. Dick Day was the Chairman of our local committee and David Williams was the Secretary. The Committee was very active for several months that summer campaigning door to door through the eastern part of the GTA.

The school closing issue was around l983. SHORA made a presentation to City Council, Dave Cook, our Councilor was a great help

In 1987 we were actively involved with a family on Greenhurst over an  addition being erected by a neighbor. The SHORA President went and made a presentation to the Ontario Municipal Board on their behalf. We were successful in maintaining the integrity of the neighborhood.

SHORA was also involved when an individual applied to rezone parts of Brentano Blvd. His intent was to put up multiple family dwellings. A group of concerned residents banded together to incorporate and create a homeowners association and SHORA was created. This group hired a lawyer and blocked this rezoning attempt.

This area is zoned as R3 single family residents to this day because of this group of dedicated individuals. Our community has grown over the years to become one of Mississauga’s best kept secrets.
